5 Years In New Zealand

In 2005 I was finishing up a semester teaching and needed to find a new job. I wanted to go back into Visual Effects, so I emailed some friends at studios in California and London, asking what the hiring climate looked like where they were and whether they could see if anyone they knew was hiring. A short while later, I got a very short email from someone I’d never met; it said simply “Hi, are you interested in coming to work at Weta Digital in New Zealand on King Kong?”

I had an itch to live abroad, but had never thought of New Zealand as a possibility. Honestly, I knew nothing about it other than it was near Australia (“I think”).  But I was up for an adventure, so I accepted. It was one of the best life decisions I’ve ever made.

To try to sum up 5 years of a person’s life in a short blog post is silly and futile. Suffice it to say, New Zealand is beautiful. I miss it dearly. The country is filled with wonderfully friendly people, and I’m happy to have made a decent share of friends in my time living there.

The bulk of my best photography from my time there is on my personal portfolio site, but I’ve picked a few favorites to include here too.
