Allen and Sarah dated long distance, communicating solely through email, for almost a year before they met face-to-face. During that time, they had gotten to know each other extremely personally, but were missing some pretty basic information: when Allen first saw Sarah his first thought was “Huh. You’re taller than I expected.” Through their digital courtship they found ways to share themselves with each other by way of some creative art projects.

When Allen wanted to try showing his photography in the New Zealand Art Show, his application to the show involved building a new portfolio website for himself. With Sarah helping him with the design, he came up with an experimental site that not only showcases some of his favorite photos, but presents them in a colorful, interesting way that highlights his patterns and habits as a photographer.

We both lived in New Zealand for just over 5 years, working as visual effects artists at Weta Digital and trying to adventure around the country as much as possible while we weren’t working long hours on films like King Kong and Avatar. While living there, Allen birthed and nurtured his love for photography, spending much of his free time taking photos of people and places he encountered. He shares some of his favorites here.
