Dani and Mike
Photography for a lovely New Zealand wedding.
Our friend Clodagh introduced us to Dani and Mike while we were living in New Zealand. They’re a pretty adorable couple who are fanatics for the ocean; Mike proposed to Dani while they were scuba diving through a marine reserve that Dani had been working for years to protect and nurture. They approached us to ask if we would be the photographers for their wedding.
Because we were friends with them and were terrified of the possibility of letting them down, we initially declined. We both love taking photos and are pretty comfortable with it, but the stakes are different when it’s your friends’ wedding. Thankfully, Dani was patient, encouraging, and politely insistent that yes, this was going to happen. So we went to work helping her plan out the schedule of her day. One thing we both immediately agreed upon was the style of photos; we like to shoot with a photojouralistic style, rather than slamming cameras in peoples’ faces and saying “SMILE!”. We like just hanging around and capturing moments that help tell the story of the day. Dani was very happy for us to work like this; the whole vibe of the wedding was to be relaxed and casual.
As it turned out, we absolutely loved this experience. The gardens Dani and Mike had chosen for their ceremony and reception were like something out of Alice in Wonderland; hedge mazes, secret gardens, orchards…it was just beautiful. We spent the entire day shooting away, and in the end we drove home feeling great: we knew we definitely wanted to do this again.
